Anyone who has ever had a pet go missing knows how heartbreaking it can be. Microchips are a great way to prevent a pet from being permanently lost. Unlike a collar, they are a form of identification that can not be easily lost or removed. The microchip is encoded with an ID number and after it is implanted, that number is registered to that pet and their owner. The chip is implanted into the deep subcutaneous tissue over the shoulders. Veterinary clinics and shelters will scan pets that are brought in and can then relocate pets with their owners.
Homeagain has a few extras associated with their chips. They are recognized internationally. Some countries require microchips for pets to visit or move there; not all chips are recognized for this purpose. For a small yearly fee(it’s included with the implantation for the first year), HomeAgain will send out alerts to area pet finders, veterinary clinics, and shelters if a chipped pet is lost. You also are able to have free calls to the Pet Poison Control Hotline run by the ASPCA.
Even if you choose not to continue paying for the extra services, your pet’s microchip number is registered in their permanent database that can be accessed by anyone who finds him or her.
At Bear Lake Veterinary Clinic, after we implant the microchip, we complete the registration process for you. Your pet is registered to you right away! You are then able to go online and upload a picture and add any other information you would like. And you do want to remember to update your information if your address or phone number changes.
